Voltaire’s Traité sur la Tolérance (1763) is one of the most celebrated texts of the European Enlightenment — written in passionate response to the wrongful execution of the Protestant merchant Jean Calas in Toulouse in 1762, it became a landmark argument for religious tolerance, judicial reform, and the rule of reason over fanaticism. It remains as powerful and relevant today as when first published over 260 years ago.

This Folio Society edition is a beautifully produced collectible hardcover, bound in full cloth boards printed with a striking 18th-century engraving-style duotone illustration in deep burgundy and cream across the entire front, back and spine — depicting dramatic period scenes directly related to the text.
