Original late-Victorian to Edwardian British travelling fairground ride panel, dating from approximately 1890–1915, hand-painted in traditional oil enamel on curved timber with original iron mounting brackets.

This is a genuine working panel from a historic UK fairground ride, most likely from a gallopers or scenic ride, still retaining its original curved profile designed to follow the shape of the rotating ride structure. The heavy timber construction, iron locating brackets, and the presence of period flat-head screws and hand-driven nails hidden beneath layers of paint confirm its long working life and multiple historic repairs by travelling showmen.

The surface displays multiple historic paint schemes, clearly visible through extensive flaking and wear, revealing earlier decorative designs beneath the current artwork. In pre-war fairground art, this type of flaking that exposes earlier designs is known as “stratified paint history” – it is quite literally the archaeology of the ride, documenting how the panel evolved over decades of fairground use.

The paint is original oil enamel, now showing severe age-related flaking, lifting, cracking, and loss across much of the surface. Some areas are actively lifting and it is inevitable that loose paint flakes will be present within the packaging during transit, due to the nature of the aged paint layers. This is normal for unrestored fairground panels of this age.

There are chips, splits, timber movement, historic repairs, surface losses, and wear around the iron mounting points, all consistent with its age and working life on a moving ride. The panel will require sympathetic TLC and further conservation or repair to stabilise the paint and timber and prevent further deterioration. This has been intentionally left unrestored to preserve originality and allow the next owner to decide on the correct conservation approach.

A rare and museum-quality piece of British fairground history, suitable for collectors, heritage displays, interior designers, bars, film and theatre sets, or period installations.
